Half the outlets in one room went dead but the breaker isn't tripped. Why?

Usually one failed connection upstream is starving everything past it. The most common culprits are a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit (often a bathroom, garage, or exterior outlet that also protects bedroom receptacles), or a loose backstab connection in the first outlet of the chain. In older Essex and Parkville homes it's frequently the backstab. We find the break in the chain instead of swapping the dead outlet at the end, which wouldn't fix it.
